Change-Maker Academy Explores Sustainable Agriculture at Red Granite Farm
On October 29, 2024, students from Change-Maker Academy had the opportunity to tour Red Granite Farm, a diverse agricultural operation located in rural Boone County, Iowa. Owned and operated by Steve and Nicole Jonas, the farm spans over five acres and features a variety of vegetables, pumpkins, 800 laying hens, and more than 300 varieties of perennials.
Steve and Nicole, both graduates of Iowa State University with degrees in Horticulture, transformed their vision of cultivating fresh produce for their community into a reality in 2007. Since then, Red Granite Farm has grown significantly to meet the evolving needs of consumers. Recent expansions include additional farmland, high tunnels for year-round produce cultivation, and a product shed for enhanced storage capabilities. Nicole emphasized to the students that each year is a learning experience, leading them to discover new practices and innovations to incorporate into their operations.
The primary mission of Red Granite Farm is to provide fresh, local produce to surrounding communities. Approximately 80% of their harvest is sold at the Ames Farmers Market and Des Moines Farmers Market, with an increasing amount of produce, eggs, and perennials available for purchase directly from the farm or through their website. Red Granite Farm also participates in the Abundance Share Program, allowing individuals and families to prepay for four months of fresh produce at a value of $45. These shares are distributed monthly and typically contain three to four different types of seasonal vegetables. Additionally, Red Granite supplies local businesses such as Burgie’s and the Filling Station with farm-fresh eggs.
During the tour, students gained valuable insights into vegetable production in Central Iowa and were reminded of the dedication farmers exhibit in nurturing the land that sustains our communities with local food.
