Rooted In Opportunity: Katie Goering's Path to Ag Innovation

Agricultural Business Major, Entrepreneurship Minor – Archbold, Ohio

Katie Goering’s journey to Iowa State has been anything but ordinary. Originally starting her college career as a nursing student, Katie quickly realized that agriculture was where her true passion lay. After transferring from Kent State and Northwest State in Ohio, she found her fit at Iowa State University, where strong scholarships and unique hands-on opportunities sealed the deal.

On campus, Katie has embraced every chance to get involved. She became part of the Student Incubator Program after her Ag Ethics professor, Kevin Kimle, connected her with Jack Chism. That introduction opened the door to countless opportunities, including winternships, supply chain internships, a role with Land O’Lakes, and even working with Gross-Wen Technologies on algae processing.

Katie says one of her favorite courses has been Agriculture Ethics (ECON 3620), which allowed her to explore real-world scenarios through discussion-based learning. “It was great because it wasn’t just busy work—it felt real and impactful,” she shared.

When asked what advice she’d give to other students looking to explore entrepreneurship, Katie encourages others to take the leap:
“Don’t be afraid to jump into it. Try it and see if it works. The beauty of trying new things is that even if one idea doesn’t work, it can lead you to something even better.”
